Beyond Google

Did you know that there is more to Google than just a search engine? If you are using Blogger for your blog account you are already using a Google product. This week, I want you to spend some time looking at some of the tools that Google offers beyond their popular search engine.

Start by visiting Google's products page. You can also get there by clicking on the More link at the top left side of their site.

I recommend that you start with the following...
Some of these require you to download software and install it on your computer. If you don't want to install it on your home machine, this would be a great opportunity for you to use the Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 software.

Feel free to try as many of the utilities on your personal computer as you'd like. However, please remember that downloading and installing software on ECC computers without permission violates the IT Security Policy. (That means don't install anything on the lab computers!) If you would like to test some of the software on a campus computer, please see me and I will provide you with a hard drive that you can use.

When you're done exploring, post a comment here and let me know which tools you used and which ones you liked best. You'll need to post your comment before 8:00 AM Tuesday, 19 February 2008 to get credit for it. And just to see who is reading my blog like you are supposed to, your comment will count as 75% of your blog grade for the week!

I have used Google Maps and Google Earth before and I like both of them. Google Maps comes in handy when directions are needed. The Google Earth program is fun to play with. I really don’t use Picasa. The Google Labs program is very interesting and I will be using it more in the future. I will need more time with Google Code to see if I like it. My favorite tool is Google Earth it is fun to see sites that you may never get to see in real life.

I have used Google Earth before, but on a 56k connection, so it wasn't doing much. Google Maps is useful for when you google trying to find a place and can add one click to get directions, but I much prefer Mapquest. I don't have a website so I have limited use for Code, and I don't have enough pictures for the use of Picasa. I like Google Maps the most as I don't use Google Earth. But Google is one heck of a search engine.

I really like using Google map because it is a very useful tool to use for getting driving directions when going out of town. Google Earth is really cool; it is neat to see different sceneries throughout the earth in a 3D format. That was awesome!

I use Google quite often for different purposes, so I am aware of some of the other features they offer besides searching the net. I never had the need to use Picasa. I like Google Labs because it gives you insight on new things that Google are experimenting with and it also allows you to narrow your search for more specific items.

People should explore Google more because it is more than a search engine.

I like Google Maps because it’s similar to Map Quest. With Google Map you can drag your map to see other location and you can zoom into you map to see a better image. I think Google Map is more accurate than Map Quest (my opinion). Google Earth is a great tool because you can get a sense of how a city looks and the satellite zooms down on most addresses that you enter in. Google Earth shows so much as street lights, building, and anything in the surrounding area that is close to the address or city you enter in. It’s nice to see the world in a 3D format. I played around with Google Lab and found out that it is a good search engine because it narrows you search and it shares ideas and new experiments. When I use Google, I only use it as a search engine, but now I see all the cool things Google has to offer.

Usually when I want to go somewhere and need directions I use Map Quest. I never thought of google for anything else other than a search engine. I used google map because we are planning a trip to the zoo in Asheboro. It was interseting being able to move about the map and zoom in. You learn something new everyday. Thanks.
